Since iOS 11, the iPhone has used the HEIC format by default to take photos. This format has a high compression rate but is not supported by many software and websites. After uploading the HEIC file, the browser uses a built-in decoder to decode the image and then re-encode it to JPEG. You can adjust the output quality and view the file size in real time.
HEIC is based on HEVC (H.265) video encoding, and the file size is only half that of JPEG at the same image quality. However, older versions of Windows, Android and some web forms do not recognize this format. There are no compatibility issues after converting to JPEG.
The most common scenario is when iPhone photos are sent to a Windows computer and need to be edited or uploaded, or submitted to a website that only accepts JPEGs. All conversions are completed locally in the browser and photos will not be uploaded to the server.
